Another subject related to travel is the issue of taking flight. Reguera has always painted images that appear to be moving away. To him, it feels like everything in the world is in motion. This ‘everything’ is also related to the clouds, which look as if they are trying to float from the picture. Reguera likens his paintings to music, suggesting that both painting and music consist of layers, which in the end are superimposed in a polyphony.
Reguera nearly always paints listening to music because it creates an environment, an atmosphere that helps to initiate his own creative process. To him there is a distinct power in synaesthesia, of painting the topography of music and of converting sounds into colours—like in the experiments of Kandinsky, Scriabin, Tobey and Cage. One of Reguera’s sonic paintings, Vibrations of Mozart, was shown at UMAG in Hong Kong in 2015. He also has painted pictures listening and responding to the music of Telemann, Mendelssohn, Grieg, Sibelius and Satie.
