Around 2007, Reguera began projecting his paintings into space, first horizontally through a series of installations on the floor. While exploring the relationship with the space around the paintings, he also began expanding his three-dimensional paintings. In 2010 the next step was to place a three-dimensional painting on the wall and then expand it in front of an audience, as if the image’s substance, its lifeforce, were leaking out. For Reguera, the most intense and exciting aspect of the performance was for it to emerge organically while everyone was listening to the same music.
UMAG Performance with Alberto in action
Reguera is committed both to interacting with individual spectators and to bringing out a painting’s intangible aspects—the space which surrounds the physical work. These vibrations, or aura, are what the painter sets out to materialise through a form of upward spilling or throwing. This approach helps Reguera to see how painting can broaden artistic paths and affirm the worth of contemporary art.
